BACKGROUND

  • BS and MS degrees in physics from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University

  • Postdoctoral experience at the Niels Bohr Institute and Lawrence Berkeley Lab.

  • Academic experience for over 30 years, mostly at the University of Texas at El Paso, as professor at all levels.

ACADEMIC SERVICE

  • VP (2021-2023) and President (2023-2025) of UTEP's Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

  • Chair of the Physics Department from 6/2001 to 12/2008. 

  • Assistant Dean of the College of Science from 1999 to 2001. 

  • Has been in countless academic committees and leadership positions, such as graduate advisor, coordinator of the Masters in Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, coordinator of the Distance-Learning MS Physics Program, organizer of the Physics Summer Research Program, Chair of Tenure of Promotion at Departmental and College level, etc.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE

  • Member of The American Physical Society, National Society of Hispanic Physicists, Sociedad Mexicana de Física, Academia Mexicana de Ciencia, and others.

  • Has served in numerous boards and committees for The American Association of Physics Teachers, National Society of Hispanic Physicists, Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans, Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, as well as many Federal Agencies, such as NSF, NASA, etc.

  • Reviewer for professional journals such as the Physical Review, Rev. Mex. Fisica, and others, for Standardized exams such as the GRE, College Board Advanced Placement, College Board’s College Level Examination (CLEP) Program, and for publishing companies such as McGraw Hill, 2011,  Cummings, John Wiley and Sons., Wm. C. Brown Publisher, Centgage, OpenStax, and others.

  • Advisor for Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepcion (Chile), Texas A&M - Commerce, Universidad Playa Ancha (Chile), University of Texas at Brownsville, Universidad Autónoma de Cd. OUTREACH

  • National leader, founder of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists (with D. Ernst and C. Ordoñez).

  • Dozens of interviews in radio, TV and newspapers, dozens of general audience presentations, dozens of general audience publications

  • Has participated and organized over one hundred outreach activities.

TEACHING

  • Has taught 25 different physics courses at all levels.

  • Has directed thesis work of one Ph.D. student, 35 MS students and 8 BS students and has supervised 46 undergraduate students in research projects.

  • Has been a member in close to 50 MS and Ph.D. thesis committees.

  • Has developed dozens of items for course curricula improvement and teaching material.

RESEARCH

  • Specializes in nuclear physics, materials, science education and other areas including the social sciences.

  • Has written and edited several books, and written chapters in books, over 130 articles in journal publications and conference proceedings.

  • Has delivered over 90 presentations in national and international meetings and over to 110 talks in in seminars and colloquia.

  • Has organized about one dozen of national, regional and local conferences, has chaired dozens of sessions in conferences, and is and has been a member of about 20 international advisory boards of conferences and symposia.

GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

  • Dr. Lopez has been the PI and co-PI in 106 grant proposals for research, education and outreach activities. 

  • Has been a PI or co-PI in a total of 47 grants funded for over 5 million dollars.

AWARDS AND HONORS

  • Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) 2007, 2020 HENAAC Award for Education, 2018 Mentoring Award from NATURE, 2018 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, 2016 UT Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, 2015 Bouchet Award of the APS, 2014 Mentoring Award of the Division of Nuclear Physics of the APS, 2009 Hyer Award of the Texas Section of APS, MAES 2010 Outstanding MAEStro Award, SHPE 2011 Educator of the year, Rho-Sigma-Tau Schumaker Professor by UTEP, Centennial Speaker by the APS (2009-2001).

  • Has received 19 awards for research and education.

  • Dr. Lopez’s students have received close to 20 awards and honors while being under his supervision.

  • Inducted into the Mexican Academy of Sciences as Corresponding Member in 2012, and in 2018 into the Academy of Distinguished Former Students of Texas A&M University, College Station.
